You guise! Halp?

I need some ideas of good music from around 84-86. Preferably of the rock/punk sort but some pop (Duran Duran etc) is perfectly okay.

Thanks!

Disclaimer - the following is all from a UK perspective, so some of these might not have been well-known in the US at the time.

The Cramps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cramps
Did some good stuff around that period, punk/psychobilly, although I'm not sure how famous they would have been. Might have been more of a cult/niche thing.

The Communards:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Communards - particularly popular on the gay scene.

Eurythmics: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurythmics_discography

I was listening to a lot of early U2 at the time, although they didn't make it really big until 1987 when Joshua Tree came out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U2_discography

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" was a big hit in 1984 (in the UK anyway).

The Beastie Boys? might be a bit early for them.

New Order: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Order

If you wanted metal, there's always Motorhead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motörhead

REM were starting to do quite well at the time, although didn't have huge success until 87, according to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R.E.M.

The Smiths: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smiths

"(Free) Nelson Mandela" was a big hit for The Special AKA in 1984.

Talking Heads: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talking_Heads

Wikipedia page '1980s in music' might be helpful.

Hope some of that is useful :)

Edit: also Simple Minds became popular in the US after' "Don't You Forget About Me" was a big hit in 1985 due to being featured in the film 'The Breakfast Club'.

Yay Ali! My heroine. Some good suggestions that I'd forgotten like The Talking Heads, Eurythymics and New Order. Motorhead will also work well. I've already pulled down all The Smiths that I have for the soundtrack. Which means How Soon is Now? LOL.

I went for the Beasties first but Licensed to Ill didn't come out until late 86 so it won't work.

Your Brit only suggestions are also really good. My character, Luke, is in a band so I see him having this huge collection of music from all over.

Thank you!

Oooh, The Communards and Eurythmics, awesome.

Here's an album that came out in 1985, soft rock, my heroes of the time *g*
Magnum - On a Storyteller's Night.

Probably not what you're after, but I loved it :)
