Too early for this but I've thought of it before and wanted to put it out there in case I missed something somewhere.

If the Narada hadn't come, and if Jim was on schedule to graduate from SFA in three years (like he promised Pike at the shuttle), he would have graduated before Bones, right?

I just always assumed that, doctor or no, Bones would have had to go through the same SFA training the other cadets did and, if so, the thought of Jim leaving him behind makes me a sad panda.

You know, I've had this same though and I've sort of explained it away to myself. I think technically Bones would have had to do four years instead of three but in my own head I like to pretend that he gets to test out of or already has credit for enough of his classes to graduate in three. I mean, the man already has multiple degrees. Surely he can skip some general ed?

I sort of figured as much, too, but hadn't actually seen it documented anywhere so I got all emo about it. *facepalm*

It'd be interesting to explore in fic.

I say no because Bones is a Lieutenant Commander already when he is on the ship when the Narada happens. Bones didn't have to do the medical degree, he already had them. He had to do some of the Officer training courses and some more specific medical ones, hence his presence in the KM test. But from what I can gather from the canon we get and what is known about the Academy, Bones outranks Jim in their final year in the Academy and would have graduated at the same time. Cadets actually do achieve rank while they are at the Academy. With Kirk being command track he would have come out as a Lieutenant. Bones would still out rank him. ;) Jim would be the same level as Uhura, which adds another layer to her annoyance at him in the test when he insists on the "captain" title.

Sorry Jim, Bones is a competitive bastard and I think he decided that, well, if the little blond bugger thinks he can do it in three, so can I!

Oh, I had forgotten about that. Plus, he pulls the "senior medical officer" card when he's sneaking Jim on the ship and obviously second-in-line for CMO before Puri died to make him CMO.

Yay! Now I feel better. *glomps you*

*glomps right back*

I tend to obsess a little about canon stuff and making things work in my head... I think Pike had already chosen McCoy to be on the Enterprise. Hence their interaction on the ship and yeah, that Spock was all "yeah, your it" after Puri went *boom*

Which makes hits my not-so-secret Pike/McCoy kink HARD! *g*

Gah, they need to do some serious BAMF!Bones in the next flick. I will be so disappointed and might have to subject people to my first ST fandom wank if they don't LOL.

Well I gave Karl the quote from Gene and told him to pass it onto JJ and that we all wanted MOAR BONES in the next movie. He actually had kept the quote, it was all folded up and shoved in his back pocket so *squeee* I hope he did pass it on. He was very shocked to find out that the largest community wasn't a kirk/spock but a kirk/mccoy one. We were, duh dude, at him on that one. Silly boy :D

Ahh Pike/McCoy not my thing. ;) Bones is all for Jim thanks very much! I prefer Pike with Number One thank you very much. But it's hard to find good Pike/Number One stories. Seriously fandom, she is the original Spock and so BAMF!

My Bones/Jim feelings are weird. As far as I'm concerned, Jim belongs to Bones. But I can ship Bones and a bunch of other people. Usually, though, if Jim is with anyone besides Bones, Bones is usually there as a third.

Yeah, I can normally read Bones with other people too, Jim not so much! Well Jim/Gaila, which I have written and love writing, especially when it ends up as a threesome with Bones. As long as Jim ends up with Bones I'm ok with it.

Jim with Spock in reboot? I run far, far away from. It just doesn't work and often the writers do not real with Uhura at all nicely. I like Uhura! And I love her with Spock in reboot.

There was a discussion on the jb fandom workshop the other week where one response I found quite interesting. There are a couple of writers that have come over from kirk/spock and one made the observation that there aren't that many AU's written with k/s because their relationship is based on their telepathic bond. I was a little huh about that. No wonder I can't get it to make sense in my head if their relationship is based on one thing and one thing only...

I can read K/S but it's usually heavy on the angst and often dub-con. Like you, I really don't buy a romantic relationship for them in Reboot. Mostly because Spock was an ass to Jim from the very beginning. Bringing up George in the academic hearing was a total douche move.

It really does seem that, with Reboot, the only thing anyone can base a Spock/Jim romance on is the bond the other Jim/Spock had with nothing else to go on and that just doesn't work for me. Not when we've got Jim & Bones being friends from the moment they meant and three years later, Bones is still the one Jim wants with him when he beats the Kobayashi Maru.

Maybe that will change with the next movie, if they give us more Spock & Jim moments to build a trust and true friendship on but I doubt it.

See the thing is that in TOS to me it was the threesome. There are actually more m/s or k/m moments than there are k/s. It was only the movies that really ramped up the k/s, but there was still a whole lot of the threesome involved in there. I always come back to who did Spock give his soul to? McCoy, not Kirk. And Sarek didn't even blink when he found out about that. It was something that he expected to happen.

It comes back to people not really being able to understand the dynamics of a threesome, I think.

I have a little contact with an original trekkie that knows a lot of the original writers and people who worked on the series. Man I love having friends who work in the business. :D David Gerrold fully believed that Jim and Bones were together and everything he wrote had a little tinge of that in it. Spock is supposed to be asexual. If you look at the original series, Spock really wasn't interested in girls unless he was on drugs or lying to them.

I see the movie ending with the possibility of the start of their friendship. I think most of the reboot K/S comes from Chris and Zach being goofballs together and the ZQ fangirls from Heroes just wanting to slash him with someone. They were told that the epic slash pairing is K/S so they write it without actually thinking about if it works or not.

A friend of mine who bugged me and bugged me to go see the movie wanted my slash proof googles. As she fully expected to see K/S too. She trusts my opinion cause I ship based on characterisation. I told her there was only one thing going on in there and it was K/M. :D The rest is history.
